In my opinion, student success is driven by student choice. Student choice occurs when students in the classroom are giving the opportunity to make decisions within their learning environment. This can be a choice that affects their environment meaning that they are able to decide what time of situation they would work best in or with whom they will work with. Student choice can also offer students the ability to choose from a variety of different academic tasks that all demonstrate their understanding.
When students are allowed to have options and control their own learning environments they are more motivated and excited to learn. Providing opportunities that make create intrinsic motivation allows for students to enjoy learning, sometimes without even noticing that they are learning. This kind of environment fosters student success and therefore is very important to me. Within the lesson plan posted, I have allowed students to participate in centers. These centers are composed of four activities all related to our theme of study. In the case, we were in middle of studying planets. |
