My Classroom

It is a must for my classroom to be a welcoming, safe and inviting environment. By this I mean, not only do I want the room to be pleasing to the eye; but I also want the overall atmosphere of my classroom to be open, understanding, and motivational. I believe in a sense of vulnerability in my classroom. No student should be afraid to fail, i.e. get the wrong answer or make a mistake. Therefore, we address mistakes within the classroom. We tell students that it is okay to make mistakes and that not only do we make them but we learn from them as well. It is an important part of growing up and needs to be seen as so.
Everyday as students enter my classroom I want them to feel like they are a part of a family. They should feel safe to express and share their thoughts and feelings with one another. They should also feel the freedom and opportunity to challenge and drive one another to be the best learners they can be. This environment is established during the first days of school. During those first days, weeks and months it is imperative to implement routines, procedures, and set high expectations for students to ensure a classroom that is predictable and structured.
